keeping up their fine schedule, the spazio disponibile label is back with a fifth excellent ep, this time from modes. modes is an artist who is making his debut here, and he is one of a few guys spazio is creating a platform for in the coming months. modes fits right in with the deeply subliminal, transcendental style of the label and its associated party in rome. opener m52 is a supple and sci-fi mix of smooth rubber kicks and millsian melodies that are trippy and hypnotic. m51 is darker and moodier, with smeared pads and grainy ambience making for a big and shadowy chamber of end-of-days techno that is full of foreboding, and finally m44 is more forceful and brutal, with reverb and electricity static adding texture to the cavernous airwaves. compelling from start to finish, this is a fantastic debut from modes.

black merlin has gone on to release on a number of labels from around the globe including world unknown, crimes of the future, ln-cc, new jersey, common thread, island of the gods and sorn. more recently black merlin has debuted his first solo album on indonesian label island of the gods which came about when george was asked to travel over to indonesia to record traditional gamelan music and put together an album of his time over there from the field recordings hed gathered which is now complete. black merlin makes his debut on omnidisc records, with a two tracker of hard hitting distortion. after the sweat-soaked throwback fervour of his 2015 debut lp, unknown to the unknown and hot haus main man dj haus returns to rinse for a brand new 10-track album, “artificial intelligence”. working at a formidably high rate of productivity, haus returns with this new record less than 12 months after his last, and he shows no signs of slowing down, maintaining his reputation for creating hard-edged dance anthems that leave a lasting effect on the dancefloor.

simo cell returns to livity sound for the label’s final release of 2016. following up his debut 12” for the label in 2015, the parisian brings his varied tastes to this diverse four tracker. from the hazy bumping rhythms of ‘gliding’ to the pulsating strobed snare assault of ‘away from keyboard’, these razor edge productions demonstrate exactly why he’s been tipped by so many as one to watch.

motion (newcastle) co-founder and resident richie steedman makes his debut on jamie jones’ hottrax imprint with three groove-centered productions this november. a key component in the north of england’s electronic music scene, steedman has had a deep-rooted passion for house and techno since becoming au fait with a pair of turntables at merely 12 years old. since then the british dj launched newcastle’s motion event series back in 2010, where he’s a resident alongside fellow hottrax producer patrick topping. he now joins a roster spanning the likes of yousef, harry romero, waff, mat.joe and more. echoing chopped vocals, crunchy percussion and a meandering bassline form the basis of ‘stitcher’ before undulating drums join a medley of squelches, pops and whirrs in ‘chance it’. concluding the package, ‘slip’ incorporates infectious open hi-hats and a stuttering vox for a moody and mesmerising finale.

following the successful reception of klodio s debut ep, the tokyo-based producer spent the year playing shows in japan with various upcoming artists like fulbert and label co-founder alixkun, and taking part in disruptive events such as pow wow school of music. when klodio decided it was time to start recording his second ep, he took a slightly different direction, going from techno-influenced detroit house to house-influenced detroit techno. -shinagawa sunrise- is a fast-paced retro-futuristic jazz jam which climaxes on a fantastic sax solo by the young and talented ilia skibinsky. daiba goes a step further in this techno journey, flowing from glowing, light, syncopated chords to a dark and aggressive atmosphere, and back again to the relaxing chords. more polished, singular, deep, and yet aggressive than -toktroit-, -rainbow bridge ep- brings another stone in the asia-infused universe that the french producer is bringing to the world of electronic music.

building a formidable reputation as an artist with a diverse set of approaches in the field of electronic music, ukranian producer cape cod delivers his debut album on kiev house in a fine display of musicianship. from the opening track -among the stars- (which features constantine on vocal) it s clear that this will be more than a straight up collection of dancefloor tracks. there are indeed some upbeat house tracks to be enjoyed, not least on the razor sharp garage bumper -we don t have to-, but there s also equal space given over to more introspective jams such as -put u down-.

having made his label introduction with his remix of label newcomer villete’s “rillia-, darand land gets to spread out and show off his unique brand of euphoric and uplifting deep house on his debut ep for the label, ‘discover you’. the title track is classic darand land, with bright piano chords, buzzing organs and a thick chicago house bass line. siren-like pads fade in and out from the periphery, as electrifying percussion elements come into play. frank & tony take a turn and apply their signature style onto the former track, adding a chunkier kick with bright as day claps and hi-hats to propel the track through the opalescent haze draped over the melodic elements. on the flip, “marcela’s sense” is a blissed out, head down late night affair. cosmic pads swirl around glistening keys and repressed organ chords, as toms bounce among the steady hi-hat ride, lulling the listener into a state of euphoria. the ep closes out with the atmospheric, peak time detroit house cut, “souls awash-. a serpentine bass line runs the show amidst swelling pads and in-your-face kicks and percussion. as with all of his productions, the track shines in the smaller details that float in and out of focus throughout, lending the track’s weightier elements an even greater sense of gravitas.

tokyo’s yoshinori hayashi makes his debut on lovers rock with “asylum,” an ep of deliciously bent avant-house and free jazz-esque voyages. hayashi has been making a name for himself as a formidable studio talent, and on “asylum” he offers some of his finest work to date. “agent dissolving device” welds louche narration, kaleidoscopic atmospheres and an energized girl-group hook to an earworm groove. an invaluable tool for adventurous djs, “so wrong it’s right” doesn’t begin to describe it. meanwhile, the b-side is given over to hayashi’s more sombre, quasi-chamber music leanings. “burrow” and “the old man” both use wheezing, wandering piano figures to articulate a mournful, bleary-eyed beauty that seems to flicker in the shadows of the a-side’s extroversion.

after three years and ten eps, amsterdam s will & ink label offers up its first full length from label favorite yaleesa hall and is called woodall. it explores texture, space and sound design in fascinating ways. since 2014 yaleesa hall has released four eps on the label and has become known for breakbeat laced stripped-down techno. this debut album finds the producer indulging a less dance floor focussed version of his sound, and one that is better suited to the full length format. explaining that his tracks most often start as -sound structures and experiments- that then get reworked for the club, here they stay closer to their original forms. woodall is sound sculpture that is electronic and synthetic but also made of real world sounds that are all truly absorbing. comes in gatefold sleeve.

the mythical transdance from uk duo night moves is given a much needed official repress by domestica records and the barcelona label have spared no expense. a limited pressing of 400 10-s come housed in hand screen printed sleeves accompanied by a leaflet with complete biography of the band. despite the paucity of night moves discography, it s clear the duo of michael guihen and john davis have had an everlasting effect on the canon of synth music with their much admired debut. transdance was originally released as a limited 12- white label in 1981, finding favour on the dance floors of europe and new york city yet never really gained the wider exposure it richly deserved. original copies of the gc1 pressing of transdance still command slightly ridiculous prices on discogs so kudos to domestica for this rather special presentation which features a previously unreleased demo cut -life up- on the flip.
